DeVeaux provides academic clout and bu rigor, bringing to bear a strong foundation in musicological methodology. The listening notes are particularly good. I was quite familiar with jazz history, but still learned some things from the narrative; but, more than that, the numerous descriptions of pieces was incredibly helpful.

Deveaux states the facts surely and covers the same ground but it was refreshing to read about the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra and Albert Ayler among others.
