I was disappointed in the unanswered questions this book left especially what are the fire lizards special role and why is everyone so obsessed with them Out of the three books, this one is the best even though the main character switches from Menolly to her best friend. He’s a pretty entertaining character usually so you’d think that’s a good thing, but in this installment he manages to take a personal journey similar to Menolly’s in Dragonsong, and frankly he gets a little boring. Villains continue to be wholly villainous, and the narrative again is one of the completely honorable and good people versus the utterly despicable and beastly ones. No longer capable of singing, Piemur is sent on various errands by Masterharper Robinton, including the task of learning the complicated beats of the messenger drums.

I think I would have understood and liked it a little more in the context of the whole series; I was reading the Harper Hall trilogy, but it looks like there’s another book— The White Dragon —that comes between Dragonsinger and Dragondrums. This is another delightful adventure. My mom bought it for me one summer and I devoured it and began my love of Pern. Also I think this book works better if you’ve read enough of the Dragonrider books to understand what’s happening on the Southern continent and what the pro I understand why this book disappoints a lot of readers.

What a quality lady!

In the end, I think it is a good series for tween girls to read. Piemur won me over however and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Its entertaining reading about the situations he manages to get himself into and out of.

This is no trilogy. When I picked this book up to read, I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t a continuation of Menolly’s story.

Now this – this is interesting, because it’s so clearly a book meant to be read with information from other books in the series, information that the first two Harper Hall books don’t have. Piemur is not even close to being fleshed out as a character and, due to this, does not have enough weight as a driving force for this story.


This is at odds with the idea of a trilogy whose arc seemed to be the coming of age of a young girl.


McCaffrey, What were you thinking? Unknown to him, the steps to the drumheights have been greased by the apprentices, and Piemur falls and knocks himself out as he runs up them. He has one of the most impressive voices at Harper Hall and, in the world of Pern, there are few things more important than the ability to sing and write songs.

There are a lot of political machinations that are only referenced – so much of what’s going on in the southern weyr draggondrums confusing to me! Like many who read this book, I felt disappointed when Mcxaffrey started it.

He has such a great spirit that he sees the positive aspect of things. Not just because I want to though I do indeed want tobut because the sense of story in the first two books flowed with a confidence utterly lacking in this final one.

The Dragon books were part of the network of books that introduced me in my teen years to fantasy and sci-fi and on drgondrums them years later it is encouraging to find them still as well written as I remember them. This book follows Piemur. Realising his position allows him to discover more about the events on Pern than the gossip in the Harper Hall could, he makes an effort dfagondrums learning the drum codes, inadvertantly making enemies out of the other drum apprentices, who aren’t learning as fast.
