Next, the author walks the reader through power sources for the amplifier dealing with how power supplies work, how to build regulated supply types, all you’ll need to know about the variety of deaign designs, and how to use each of the components needed in them. The book is really a condensed course in analog circuit design featuring vacuum tubes in audio applications.

Michael Reed rated it really liked it Jan 07, The Germans Reiner zur Linde and Japanese Asano,Shishido et al ar far ahead of anything published in English to date and until the US press “catches up” or someone translates these works,I think the would-be tube designer would do well to concentrate on literature from the mainstream tube period.

Chapters on output stages and transformers, power supplies and voltage regulators, and stability networks round out the design portion of this book.

On the other hand, if you’ve been using tubes for years, can read a schematic, and have assembled several amplifiers or preamplifiers, but never quite understood just what was going on in all that nice circuitry, then Bruce’s book can unveil all the mysteries of amplification which you have wondered about all this time.

With time and effort, however, the design concepts introduced in this book at least to me gradually become clearer. Bruce clearly believes that the “hands on” approach, coupled with the reader’s own imagination and creativity, will yield far more satisfying results than merely reading words on the page. My main nitpick is the resource section in the back. I think absolute beginners should start with the bookwork first and then build simple projects such as regenerative receivers with FET’s before moving to tubes and then line powered guie gear.
